Two-piece set for heat: loose shirt with open neck and a short front placket closed by buttons, paired with straight trousers. Seams are reduced to limit weight. Sleeves set for free reach; trouser rise allows sitting without tension. Cotton helps evaporation. Works as daywear in long warm spells or as housewear where interiors run hot. Coverage remains complete while air can circulate around the torso and legs. The form supports sleep, reading, and desk work in damp heat. First employed in French Guiana where quick drying and breathability were essential.
The equatorial climate in French Guiana is stable in temperature but defined by rainfall. Precipitation commonly exceeds three metres per year region-wide. Interiors remain warm and damp across seasons. Forest cover slows evaporation and maintains high ambient humidity. Garments that could dry rapidly and pass air were preferred. Cotton sourced from India, proved appropriate for repeated wear in these conditions compared with heavier European cloth.
