Straight legs, plain front, and side drawstrings that secure the waist without heavy hardware. Seat and thigh ease support sitting and crouching. Hem width allows air to travel upward as the wearer moves. Flat-felled seams manage repeated washing. In long summers these trousers provide coverage with little weight; indoors they remain comfortable where temperatures stay high after sunset. Designed for quick adjustment and drying. Origin traces to French Guiana, where simple, breathable trousers were needed for daily tasks in saturated air.
With equatorial placement, diurnal temperature swing is small yet humidity is high. Clothing remained damp unless cuts were open and fabrics lightweight. Drawstring waists reduced metal use and bulk, aiding comfort in heat and simplifying repairs. Straight legs and modest hems balanced airflow with protection in a region where insects and vegetation were constant factors of daily movement.
