Knee-length wrap gown with belt and piped edges. Shorter hem reduces weight; sleeves allow reach without extra cloth. Functions as a light top layer over sleepwear in warm interiors. In French Guiana it appeared during the penal colony period, when simple forms and breathable fabrics were necessary under equatorial heat and limited supply.
From 1852 to 1952 France operated the Cayenne penal colony, commonly referred to as Devil’s Island. Tropical heat, disease, and shortages characterised conditions. Political prisoners, including Alfred Dreyfus, were held within the system. Clothing was reduced to functional pieces: light cotton, straightforward cuts, and quick-drying finishes.
